Beyond constructing the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pegasusseniorliving.com\/services\/memory-care\/\">Connections<\/a> <\/strong>Program for <strong>memory care<\/strong>, Dr. Petersen regularly contributes her Alzheimer\u2019s and dementia care knowledge to national news sources.<\/p><p>Find out about the history of the <strong>Connections<\/strong> Program and how it supports people with <strong>neurocognitive disorders<\/strong>. Read Dr. Petersen\u2019s contributions to current topics and find out what all her accreditations mean.<\/p><h2>Beginning Connections Memory Care<\/h2><p>Dr. Petersen joined Pegasus Senior Living as a consultant in February of 2020. Before introducing her memory care program, COVID-19 changed the world.<\/p><p>Instead of being able to jump into leading dementia training, she:<\/p><ul><li>Fought to find ample PPE equipment for team members<\/li><li>Introduced sanitation protocols as new information became available<\/li><li>Worked to inform families about the new normal in senior living<\/li><\/ul><p>However, through all the adversity, <strong>Connections<\/strong> is now available in<strong> 28 Pegasus Senior Living communities<\/strong> around the country to support families living with <strong>Alzheimer\u2019s<\/strong> and <strong>dementia<\/strong>.<\/p><p>Long-term care for memory loss is a relatively new idea. The term \u2018assisted living\u2019 has only been around since <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/gerontologist\/article\/47\/suppl_1\/8\/614189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1985<\/a>. Pegasus Senior Living Co-Founder, CEO, and Chair <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pegasusseniorliving.com\/leadership-team\/chris-hollister\/\">Chris Hollister<\/a> <\/strong>was a pioneer in developing dedicated memory care wings in his independently-owned assisted living communities in the mid-1990s.<\/p><p>Today, <strong>Connections <\/strong>is pioneering a new way to add purpose and structure to the lives of people living with <strong>Alzheimer\u2019s<\/strong> and <strong>other forms of dementia<\/strong>. It was only fitting for someone who had roots in the early days of memory care to join forces with Dr. Petersen to create this signature service.<\/p><h2>How does Connections support dementia?<\/h2><p>A stroke left Dr. Petersen with memory and mobility loss. After making a recovery thanks to <strong>neuroplasticity treatments<\/strong>, she began researching how to use the same therapies to treat people with dementia.<\/p><p><strong>Connections<\/strong> is the fulfillment of her extensive dementia research. The program combines emotions, physical movement, and continued learning to build new neural pathways in the brain. The <strong>data-based program provides structure<\/strong> and <strong>reduces anxiety<\/strong> for memory care residents.<\/p><p>\u201cI cannot wait to introduce our signature, data-driven memory care program focusing on neuroplasticity to more communities than ever before,\u201d says Dr. Petersen.<\/p><h2>Dr. Petersen Offers Alzheimer\u2019s and Dementia Advice<\/h2><h3>Heart and Brain Health<\/h3><p>The Pegasus Senior Living <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pegasusseniorliving.com\/blog\/\">Blog<\/a> <\/strong>regularly discusses how heart health directly influences brain health. In a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/high-blood-pressure-in-30s-and-40s-can-raise-risk-of-dementia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Healthline<\/a> <\/strong>article, Dr. Petersen explains how the danger of high blood pressure at a younger age can lead to leaky heart valves and a lack of blood in the brain.<\/p><p>A deficient supply of blood to the brain reduces nutrient and oxygen levels, resulting in dementia later on in life.<\/p><h3>Alcohol and Dementia<\/h3><p>Drinking alcohol contributes to numerous health problems when not practiced in moderation. Owning a pet is one of life\u2019s joys. However, people living with <strong>Alzheimer\u2019s<\/strong> or <strong>dementia <\/strong>may not have the ability to care for one.<\/p><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/robotic-pets-help-older-adults-facing-dementia-5208333\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VeryWell Mind<\/a><\/strong> had a chance to receive insight from our doctor in an article about how robotic pets help people with dementia who are socially isolated.<\/p><p>Dr. Petersen originally completed a study in 2016 on the emotional effects a robotic seal had on people with dementia.
