Each planting season, the seniors of The Havens at Antelope Valley<\/a> begin to think about what herbs and vegetables they want to grow. Many of those residents are living with dementia, and the gardening club is just one of numerous therapeutic activities led and organized by the community\u2019s Connections program.<\/p>

This hands-on activity gives residents the chance to plant, water, and watch their efforts grow \u2014 literally. Whether they\u2019re tending to tomatoes or caring for colorful blooms, the gardening club provides a way to stay active and involved in a shared project. It\u2019s all part of The Havens\u2019 relationship-oriented and evidence-based Connect, Move, and Learn program.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

\u201cWhat\u2019s your favorite part of gardening?\u201d KTLA Unscripted<\/a> reporter Olivia De Bortoli asked a resident. \u201cGetting my hands dirty,\u201d the resident said, laughing. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing better than playing in the dirt,\u201d Bortoli responded.<\/p>

\u00a0The journalist visited The Havens in February 2025, and shared with viewers in Southern California how stimulating and enriching experiences can have many health benefits for seniors.<\/p>

“The engaging events we offer, like our gardening club, provide meaningful opportunities for residents living with Alzheimer\u2019s and dementia to stay active, socialize, and connect with their surroundings,” said Katherine Aleman, Executive Director. “Hands-on activities like planting and nurturing a garden not only stimulate the senses but also create a sense of purpose and accomplishment, which is so important for overall well-being.”<\/p>
