95-year-old Jack M., a resident of The Village at Rancho Solano<\/a>, never thought learning new technology like a computer or smartphone would be easy or fun. And to be honest \u2014 it hasn\u2019t been. But being taught by one of San Jose\u2019s brightest minds has been especially meaningful.<\/p>

Upon graduating UC Davis in the spring, Avantika Gokulnatha was honored with the University Medal, marking her as the top graduating student of 2025. In her spare time, she led the student organization \u2018Breaking Barriers\u2019, which is how she met the senior she has lovingly dubbed as \u201cUncle Jack\u201d.<\/p>

They could be out partying, having a good time,\u201d he told CBS News<\/a>. \u201cBut they\u2019re here saying \u2018hit this button, hit that button.\u2019 It makes a big difference.\u201d<\/p>

Avantika\u2019s passion for helping aging adults is inspired by her late grandfather, who lived in India. \u201cMaybe I can help someone else’s grandparents whose family lives far away,\u201d she also shared with the news outlet. \u201cMaking older people feel remembered, part of the community. Making sure they are involved and don’t feel so forgotten.”<\/p>

Jack, a World War II veteran, never imagined how advanced the world would become. In his youth, he learned to speak German and served as a military policeman. After living over nine decades, he\u2019s now tech savvy enough to watch Avantika\u2019s commencement ceremony over a live stream.<\/p>

The new graduate has lofty goals set for a bright and successful future. Avantika will soon attend medical school, with hopes of innovating new ways to prevent age decline and improving independence for seniors.<\/p>
