Sixty years ago, a quiet Alabama front porch set the stage for a lifetime of love. Wayne and Gail R., residents at Pegasus Landing of Forney, celebrated six decades of marriage with the same steady joy they’ve shared since the very beginning.
Wayne, 83, and Gail, 81, met as teenagers at Gail’s aunt’s house. Gail was a junior in high school, and her aunt, intent on getting her out of the house for a little fun, made a call to a friend. That friend just so happened to be Wayne’s mother.
What started as a casual drive that day became the beginning of a lifelong journey together.
“We didn’t have any big drama,” Gail said, smiling beside Wayne in the shared apartment they now call home. “We just got to be together. That was always enough.”
Wayne was a freshman at Auburn University, studying electrical engineering with plans to work in utilities. Gail would follow him to Auburn, earning a degree in business before pursuing a career as a teacher. After Wayne graduated, he went on to work for the Alabama Power Company, and the two built a life centered around family, faith, and service.
They married on June 5, 1965, and never looked back. Today, they’re surrounded by three children — two daughters and one son — six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
To celebrate their 60th anniversary, Pegasus Landing of Forney surprised the couple with festive decorations at their dining room table and treated them to a special dessert. The celebration quickly turned into a community moment, with residents and staff joining in to congratulate the couple and ask the question everyone wanted to know: What’s the secret to lasting love?
Their answer was simple but powerful: faith in Jesus Christ and loving each other well. When asked to elaborate, Wayne shared: “Don’t go to bed angry.” Gail added, “Always try to follow God’s will for your life.” She smiled and added, “We’ve had ordinary days, but they were good ones.”
Their story has already touched many at Pegasus Landing, where they continue to inspire fellow residents and team members alike. “It’s not every day you get to witness a couple still holding hands after 60 years,” said the community’s Life Enrichment Director, Michaela Rawdon. “Their love story is the kind that makes you believe in the quiet power of commitment.”
