A Chance Seating Arrangement Turned Two Strangers into Best Friends

Pegasus | A Lunch Seat Led to a Lifelong Friendship
Residents Jill and Sandy at Pegasus Landing of Forney in Forney, Texas, where the two became best friends after being seated together at lunch last year.

It started with two open seats at a lunch table. Jill moved into Pegasus Landing of Forney in June 2025. Sandra, better known as Sandy, arrived two months earlier, in April. Pegasus Landing’s team members seated them next to each other at lunch one day, and the two got to talking. Eight months later, they call each other their best friend and spend their days together without any formal plan required.

Their favorite way to spend time together is simple and free. They like to sit on the patio, relax in their chairs, and watch the dogs play while they chat. “It’s as simple as sitting outside on my patio and watching the dogs run around,” Jill said. Sandy summed it up: “We’re on the same level cognitively, and we love spending time together and sometimes getting into trouble.”

Since their chance meeting, Jill and Sandy have shared many experiences, but one stands out. Life Enrichment Director Michaela Rawdon took them to see Christmas lights, and both said it made them feel like kids again. It was the kind of memory they never expected when they moved in, which made it even more special.

“Jill and Sandy didn’t know each other before moving here, but over the last eight months they’ve become thick as thieves,” said Michaela Rawdon, Life Enrichment Director at Pegasus Landing of Forney. “They do everything together. When I took them to see Christmas lights, they felt like little kids again. It’s a good reminder about the power of friendship later in life and finding it in unexpected places.”

Advice From Friends to Fellow Seniors

Pegasus | A Lunch Seat Led to a Lifelong Friendship

Jill’s family prayed she would find good company at Pegasus Landing. She found what she describes as “the ying to her yang” in Sandy. Their friendship became a vital support, helping them both through the transition. Sandy says that having Jill there made moving away from her house feel worthwhile and less lonely. “Having Jill here makes it easier than being back at my house alone,” she said. “I’m so thankful for being here and finding a friend for life.”

Both women have advice for anyone looking into senior living for the first time. “I would say just keep your mind open and find a friend that makes you laugh, and you can share with,” Jill said. Sandy’s take was equally direct: “Don’t expect things to be perfect, and there are going to be times when it doesn’t go your way, but at the end of the day, you are happy and secure. Get out of your room! Do activities! It will make a difference.”
