The History of The Senior Living Industry:
Assisted Living vs. Nursing Homes
Senior living is a relatively new concept. Modern nursing homes didn’t become popular and accessible until the 1960s. Due to their institutional feel, residential senior living in the U.S. started appearing in the 1980s. Watch the video above to discover how Pegasus Senior Living communities have been at the forefront of revolutionizing assisted living and memory care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Independent Living in Houston, TX
Our passion for creating a warm, welcoming environment sets Pegasus Preserve of West University apart. We focus on ensuring every resident feels valued and supported by getting to know them and their families. Our dedicated team goes the extra mile to ensure you enjoy a fulfilling and active lifestyle. We strive to make independent living in the Houston area a viable option.
Independent living communities offer you the freedom to live on your own while taking care of daily hassles like housekeeping, maintenance, and cooking. At Pegasus Preserve of West University, services include weekly housekeeping, transportation, three chef-prepared meals per day, social activities, fitness programs, and more. You maintain your independence while we handle the chores.
One of the most important senior independent living questions is: “What comes next?” Assistive services are available if you need a little extra help with tasks like medication reminders or bathing. You can arrange these services through a provider of your choice in the privacy of your apartment. This lets you stay independent while getting support only where you need it.
We can email or mail you detailed information about our community, including pricing and different floor plans. We also provide virtual tours and video conference calls!
The cost of independent living varies depending on the services you choose. Our pricing is flexible and based on what you need. Keep in mind, communities outside major cities are typically more cost-effective. In 2024, the average cost of assisted living in Houston was $5,900 per month. Independent living is generally less expensive.
These figures provide a general idea. Actual costs can vary based on your individual preferences and the specific apartment you choose.
Independent living communities offer a range of services (see the question on pricing below). If you are concerned about being able to pay for independent living on your monthly income, make sure you know all your options.
You may be eligible for additional financial support, such as Social Security, long-term care insurance, veterans benefits, and other options.
Thinking about cost-effective independent living doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Contact our sales specialist, and we will navigate this journey together!
Most independent living communities are private-pay. Pricing at our community is more reasonable than you’d expect, with utilities, delicious meals with snacks and beverages, transportation, fun activities, housekeeping, and more included! Assistive services (if needed) are billed separately.
Hospitality Services
Hospitality services are typically provided as a standard package included in the “Base Rate.” Independent living residents receive three meals per day, daily social activities, 24-hour emergency response, utilities, access to all common areas and grounds, and transportation services. Generally, Base Rate prices range from $90 to over $150 per day. Considering the cost of a hotel room, you’ll realize how reasonable this is. Most hotel rooms charge over $100 per night, and many are double that. In independent living, you live in an apartment, not a hotel room, and receive all your meals, activities, security, transportation, and utilities for less than the cost of a hotel room.
Independent living communities like Pegasus Preserve of West University are ideal for seniors who are largely self-sufficient and do not require daily assistance. They focus on providing a socially active environment with amenities such as dining services, housekeeping, and activities. They are perfect for older adults who want to downsize and enjoy a community lifestyle without the burdens of home maintenance.
Assisted living communities provide personalized support for activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, and medication management. Residents maintain independence while receiving the hands-on assistance they need to live comfortably.
