The scent of warm spices and sweet cream drifted through the halls of The Legacy at Santa Fe, carrying with it a story of community, culture, and connection. Residents received a rare treat: a live cooking experience led by none other than Chef Fernando Olea, the James Beard Award-winning mastermind behind Santa Fe’s renowned Sazón.
Each week, Life Enrichment Director Lynn Sell looks for ways to add a little more flavor — literally and figuratively — to The Legacy at Santa Fe.
One afternoon, over a casual conversation in the cozy dining room of Olea’s restaurant, she shared that goal with the owner himself. The connection was instant.
Since then, the renowned and highly accoladed chef has brought his signature creation, the indulgent and aromatic RumChata, into the heart of the senior living community — offering residents a delicious taste of downtown Santa Fe without ever leaving home.
“I saw on his website that he does a lot of community outreach. I met Chef Fernando Olea at his restaurant and invited him to visit us,” said Sell. “This is the beginning of a series we’re starting with chefs from Santa Fe.”
Originally from Mexico City, Olea has lived and cooked in Santa Fe since 1991. His cooking draws from traditional and contemporary Mexican cuisine, with an emphasis on indigenous ingredients. At Sazón, he is known for reinterpreting classic dishes and for his signature moles. In 2022, the James Beard Foundation named him Best Chef in the Southwest.
