Celebrating A Sweet Century of Wisdom and Adventures

At The Gardens at Marysville, we are honored to celebrate the remarkable life of our centenarian resident, Mary L., born on December 7, 1923, in Marinette, Wisconsin.

Mary has led an extraordinary life filled with adventure, dedication, and, most importantly, chocolate. Join us in getting to know her.

What is a centenarian?

A centenarian is someone who has reached the impressive age of 100 years or more. This milestone is becoming increasingly common in the United States, with approximately 97,000 centenarians living across the country as of 2021.

Reaching this age often involves a blend of genetics, lifestyle choices, and a bit of luck, and centenarians like Mary L. exemplify the wisdom, resilience, and vibrant spirit that come with a century of life.

At The Gardens at Marysville, we are proud to celebrate these remarkable individuals and their extraordinary journeys. Explore the Pegasus Senior Living website for a full list of centenarians near you.

A Life of Teaching and Travel

Mary’s journey began in the charming town of Marinette. She embarked on her professional path in her 30s, starting college in Casper, Wyoming.

Her academic pursuits eventually led her to graduate from Sacramento State College. With a degree in hand and a passion for shaping young minds, she became an elementary school teacher in Carmichael, California. For over 20 years, Mary dedicated herself to educating children, leaving an indelible mark on countless lives.

Upon retiring in 1986, Mary didn’t slow down. Instead, she and her daughter embraced their love for travel. They explored the stunning landscapes of Ireland, immersed themselves in the rich history of Greece and Turkey, and even enjoyed a memorable cruise through the Panama Canal.

These adventures added vibrant chapters to Mary’s life, enriching her with stories and experiences she fondly shares with friends at The Gardens at Marysville.

The Secret to Longevity: A Sweet Surprise

When asked about her secret to longevity, Mary’s response is delightfully simple: chocolate.

Whether it’s a piece of dark chocolate savored in the afternoon or a chocolate dessert enjoyed after dinner, this sweet treat has been a faithful companion throughout her years. It’s a delight our culinary team is delighted to offer.

Embracing Technology: The Greatest Invention

Living through a century of technological advancements, Mary has seen more than her fair share of groundbreaking inventions.

Yet, when asked about the greatest technology invented so far, Mary firmly believes it’s the phone. From the days of rotary dials to the modern smartphone, the phone has been a vital tool for staying connected with loved ones, especially during travels and now, as she enjoys her time at The Gardens at Marysville.

A Milestone Celebration

In December 2023, Mary reached an incredible milestone: her 100th birthday. She celebrated this momentous occasion at The Gardens at Marysville, surrounded by many friends and family.

The celebration was filled with laughter, love, and, of course, plenty of chocolate.
