Therapy Dog Visit Reconnected Residents at The Legacy at Long Meadow

Therapy dog Makena Lei, a 3-year-old Shih Tzu, recently returned to senior living community The Legacy at Long Meadow for a special visit. Residents were comforted and delighted, many recalling Makena from earlier years when her grandmother was a member of the community.

Therapy Dog Visit Sparked Joy at The Legacy at Long Meadow
Residents at The Legacy at Long Meadow in Richmond, TX, shared smiles and stories during a therapy dog visit with Makena Lei.

Moving gently from chair to chair, Makena rested her head on residents’ laps and welcomed soft pats and smiles. As she settled in, residents began sharing short stories — recalling Makena’s past visits and memories of her grandmother, who had once been part of daily life at The Legacy.

“Seeing Makena Lei again inspired residents to share stories they hadn’t mentioned in a while,” said Rebecca Missaghy, Executive Director of The Legacy at Long Meadow. “One resident recounted memories of her grandmother, and others chimed in. These visits encourage people to share, connect, and spend time together.”

Makena Lei’s dog visit offered more than companionship. It created a space for conversation and reflection. Familiar faces, even furry ones, can unlock memories and encourage residents to engage with one another in ways that feel natural and comforting.

Makena Lei’s calm presence truly helped residents relax and connect, turning a simple visit into a special opportunity for sharing stories and building emotional bonds. Moments like these are a wonderful reminder of how animal-assisted activities can enrich daily life for everyone in our community.

Kindness Beyond the Community Walls

Makena’s visit capped a week of giving for World Kindness Day. Residents at The Legacy at Long Meadow had recently read to children at Tree House Academy of Richmond and delivered small kindness bags to local partners, including Kroger staff, Children’s Lighthouse, and the Richmond Fire Department.

Together, these activities gave residents meaningful ways to engage both inside and outside the community, strengthen connections with neighbors, and reinforce the importance of kindness, empathy, and shared experiences.
