On Memorial Day, residents of The Legacy at Town Square — many of them veterans — set out on a solemn journey of remembrance.
Several seniors visited the Texas Panhandle War Memorial to quietly honor the fallen and reflect on the cost of service and sacrifice. During the annual ceremony, Amarillo native Sgt. Maj. Kharn Phetluangsy was the speaker.
“This is the most expensive holiday we have — paid for by blood,” he told the crowd, according to the Amarillo-Globe News. “It’s our duty to be the voice for those who can’t speak anymore. Their names, their legacies — we carry them forward.”
Several residents were able to share their personal connections to their military experiences, speaking with local journalists at KAMR.
In addition to the Memorial Day events, a powerful exhibit was featured at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial. “Remembering Our Fallen” honored over 5,000 service members who gave their lives during the Global War on Terror (9/11/2001–8/30/2021).
“Our residents valued the opportunity to pay their respects and recognize others who served,” said Diane Maiwald, Executive Director of The Legacy at Town Square. “For our veteran residents especially, visiting the memorial and seeing this exhibit was a chance to honor the people and the history they carry with them every day.”
