95-year-old Jack M., a resident of The Village at Rancho Solano, never thought learning new technology like a computer or smartphone would be easy or fun. And to be honest — it hasn’t been. But being taught by one of San Jose’s brightest minds has been especially meaningful.
Upon graduating UC Davis in the spring, Avantika Gokulnatha was honored with the University Medal, marking her as the top graduating student of 2025. In her spare time, she led the student organization ‘Breaking Barriers’, which is how she met the senior she has lovingly dubbed as “Uncle Jack”.
They could be out partying, having a good time,” he told CBS News. “But they’re here saying ‘hit this button, hit that button.’ It makes a big difference.”
Avantika’s passion for helping aging adults is inspired by her late grandfather, who lived in India. “Maybe I can help someone else’s grandparents whose family lives far away,” she also shared with the news outlet. “Making older people feel remembered, part of the community. Making sure they are involved and don’t feel so forgotten.”
Jack, a World War II veteran, never imagined how advanced the world would become. In his youth, he learned to speak German and served as a military policeman. After living over nine decades, he’s now tech savvy enough to watch Avantika’s commencement ceremony over a live stream.
The new graduate has lofty goals set for a bright and successful future. Avantika will soon attend medical school, with hopes of innovating new ways to prevent age decline and improving independence for seniors.
“Stories like Jack and Avantika’s remind us that learning never stops — no matter your age,” said Morgan Whinery, Executive Director. “At The Village at Rancho Solano, we’re proud to foster connections across generations that uplift and inspire our residents every day.”
