A Resident Couple of The Village at Rancho Solano Navigates Dementia Together

“It’s challenging because she’s a different person I have to get to know again,” Robert L. shares. “Sometimes, she doesn’t recognize me,” he added.

Robert is talking about his beloved bride, Barbara. Despite the challenges their relationship has faced as she navigates dementia, they remain committed and deeply in love. Their unique living arrangement at The Village at Rancho Solano offers them personalized care while remaining steps away.

The Village at Rancho Solano | Navigating Dementia Together
The Village at Rancho Solano supports couples facing dementia with personalized care that keeps loved ones close while meeting individual needs.

Robert, who resides in the assisted living part of the building, visits Barbara often on the same campus, just in different areas. The memory care program, Connections, that Barbara takes part in offers an evidence-based approach for those with dementia, focusing on Connect, Move, and Learn to support emotional, physical, and cognitive needs. Their daughters live nearby and visit often, providing familiarity.

Both Robert and Barbara have found comfort in the community. “I enjoy being here,” Robert said. “It gives me peers to talk to, it’s close to my children, and I’m surrounded by others my age.”

The Village at Rancho Solano has a robust activities schedule that provides opportunities for physical, mental, and social engagement. It also brings together all residents in assisted living and memory care. Additional support includes the virtual Dementia Support Groups led by Dr. Sandi Petersen, VP of Health and Wellness for management company Pegasus Senior Living, and a renowned geriatrician in cognitive decline, neuroplasticity, and creator of the Connections program, where families and caregivers can connect and share experiences.

“I’m grateful for the chance to be near her and have the peace of mind that she’s getting the care she needs,” Robert said. “It’s made a difference in my life.”

“We understand dementia affects each family differently,” said Morgan Whinery, Executive Director of The Village at Rancho Solano. “Our goal is to provide care while keeping loved ones close, as shown in Robert and Barbara’s experience.”
