Eight-year-olds and eighty-year-olds sat side by side at Pegasus Landing of Chisholm Trail, each tackling the same painting assignment in their own unique way. This art session paired residents with local children, creating a shared space where creativity crossed generations and conversation flowed as freely as the paint.
The activity encouraged everyone to share their unique perspectives. The visiting children brought energy and bright colors to their paintings, while residents shared their experience and skills. Throughout the session, advice and stories were exchanged, and the room was filled with laughter, making the art project a truly meaningful experience for all.
By the end of the session, the room contained much more than finished artwork. It now held new connections and friendships that hadn’t existed an hour earlier, formed through collaboration and curiosity across generations.
A Reminder That Learning Goes Both Ways
“No matter what the agenda is, our intergenerational activities are fun for everyone,” said Cassandra Mortimer, Life Enrichment Director at Pegasus Landing of Chisholm Trail. “You had people separated by 70 years sitting shoulder to shoulder, swapping advice about paint colors and asking each other questions like they’d been friends forever. The kids learned some actual painting techniques, and our residents got a masterclass in creativity.”
The artwork created was certainly impressive, but what truly stood out was seeing our residents and the children working together in harmony. These experiences show just how much these interactive activities can inspire learning, build confidence, and create meaningful connections for everyone involved.
