Step inside Ridgmar Place, and it isn’t Bingo that brings every resident at this senior living community together, but rather, poetry. Each week, dozens of seniors gather for Poetry Central, Ridgmar Place’s resident-led poetry group.

The club has become the busiest gathering, growing rapidly through word of mouth and boasting high participation with no signs of slowing down. With National Poetry Month in the spring, the timing was perfect to celebrate the expressive power and shared joy that poetry brings to Ridgmar’s residents.
There’s no stage or sign-up sheet. Just a circle of chairs, a few notebooks and napkin scribbles, and people who keep showing up. Some read original poems. Others share favorites. Some just listen. Everyone leaves with something to think about.
Poetry is often seen as distant or hard to understand, but this group reminds us it can be a simple, meaningful way to share thoughts and feelings.
“Poetry Central has been shaped by the people who attend it,” said Rachel Williams, Resident Services Director of Ridgmar Place. “It’s encouraging to see residents return each week and stay involved — especially during National Poetry Month, which reminds us how poetry can bring people together and help us express what matters.”
