Being involved in local events is one way older adults stay active and connected. On June 14, 2025, The Chateau at Gardnerville, an assisted living and memory care community, joined the annual Carson Valley Days Parade with a creative dinosaur-themed entry!

The Carson Valley Parade is one of the largest events in Gardnerville, NV. It starts in downtown Minden and travels along Highway 395 to Lampe Park. Organized by the Active 20-30 Club of Carson Valley #85, this event raises funds for local children’s programs while bringing the community together.
This year’s theme was the Jurassic Valley Parade, and The Chateau at Gardnerville accepted the challenge with a prehistoric entry that featured residents and staff.
Prehistoric Fun on Parade Day
The Chateau’s team created a dinosaur parade float with the theme: “Senior-Saurus – Still Roaring After All These Years.” The community bus, a golf cart, and a truck were decorated to resemble a rolling Jurassic habitat. Dinosaur tracks, greenery, and prehistoric designs covered the vehicles.
The team also handed out mini dinosaurs to children along the parade route. Staff members dressed in dinosaur costumes to bring smiles to spectators of all ages, too.
“We liked the idea of doing something playful and familiar,” said Katie Nichols, Executive Director of The Chateau at Gardnerville. “There’s something fun about turning a community bus into a rolling dinosaur habitat.”
Building Community Ties Through Local Events
Soon after the parade, The Chateau crew showed up at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Before they could say “hello,” a County Commissioner called out, “Hey, you’re the dinosaur gang from the parade!”
Turns out, a dinosaur float leaves a big impression. Joining local events isn’t just a good time—it helps weave tighter bonds between senior living communities and the Gardnerville area.
Social Participation and Senior Health
For older adults, staying social is like a shield against depression and feelings of isolation. Research says keeping busy with friends can sharpen the mind and give life a fresh sense of purpose.
Perks of joining in:
- Memory support: Social and creative activities help preserve memory function.
- Movement: Gentle activities like walking or decorating increase daily movement.
- Positive mood: Being part of a team effort supports emotional health.
These activities matter even more for those in assisted living or memory care. They keep routines steady while adding new experiences to enjoy.
Continuing the Tradition
The Chateau at Gardnerville isn’t hanging up its dinosaur tail anytime soon. Joining the Jurassic Valley Parade is just one way we stay active, connected, and part of Gardnerville’s local scene.
By sticking with these traditions, we help older adults stay sharp, social, and right where the action is. Expect more chances to roar with us in Douglas County soon!
