Resident Receives High Honor for Civil Rights Advocacy

The Courtyards at Mountain View | Senior Receives High Honor
Even in retirement, Silke Hansen continues to inspire those around her at The Courtyards at Mountain View.

Silke Hansen, who lives at The Courtyards at Mountain View, has been named the recipient of the 2025 Trailblazer Award by the Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Foundation. This honor recognizes Silke’s decades of dedication to civil rights and her continued advocacy for underserved populations.

Silke’s journey began when she immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1954 at the age of 10. The inscription on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,” inspired her lifelong commitment to justice and equality.

Silke’s work with the U.S. Department of Justice Community Relations Service earned her the title of “America’s Peacemaker.” Throughout her career, she played an important role in significant moments of American history, including marching with Coretta Scott King in 1968 to support striking sanitation workers in Memphis after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Silke’s work continued with her efforts in the peaceful desegregation of Boston’s public schools in the 1970s. She also contributed to the peaceful resolution of the 1987 Coors boycott and helped create a self-marshaling program for peaceful demonstrations during the 1992 Ku Klux Klan protest in Denver. Silke still teaches Marade Marshalls for the Denver Marade each year.

She was also recognized in 2008 when the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission created the Silke Hansen Community Justice Scholarship in her honor.

“Silke’s work has shaped countless lives and continues to influence civil rights movements today. We are proud to support her at The Courtyards at Mountain View,” said Meghann Ziegler, Executive Director. “Her commitment to justice and peace has left a mark on the community, and the Trailblazer Award is a reflection of her life’s work.”
