In April 2025, South Hill Village celebrated the 101st birthday of Frank F., a resident whose life story stretches across oceans, states, and decades of serving his country.
Born in 1924, Frank spent much of his early adulthood deep below the surface of the sea. Serving 27 years in the United States Navy aboard submarines, he lived by routine, precision, and quiet resolve. After retiring from the military, he stepped into a new role — as a nuclear plant operator. But that was not the end of his journey. In the next chapter of his life, he ran a ranch in Idaho, raising animals and managing land with the same discipline he carried from his years in uniform.
Frank and his late wife, Dorothy, were married for 68 years. Together, they raised 10 children. Their family now spans four generations, with 21 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Over the years, Frank and his family lived in various parts of the United States, but finally retired in Spokane, Washington. Frank stayed active in his youth with skiing, triathlons, and working on electric train systems. Now, at 101, he spends much of his time reading and reflecting. Though his routine has slowed, his interest in how things work — and in how the world keeps changing — has not. He calls the computer and cell phone two of the most fascinating inventions he’s seen evolve.
“I’ve got so much to be thankful for,” Frank told The Spokesman-Review in an article showcasing his military career and milestone birthday. “There is something new happening all the time.”
