Show and tell at Evergreen Place isn’t just for kids – it’s become a beloved weekly routine for residents in assisted living and memory care. Also known as Share a Memory, retired grade school teacher Sheila F. brought back a classroom tradition, which featured a penguin with a blue ribbon.
Sheila shared how her students used to celebrate something called “Penguin Days” — reading stories from the “Tacky the Penguin” series, then leaving with a blue ribbon just like Tacky wears in the books.
She had the chance to share about the famous character, reading several stories aloud to her fellow residents. When she finished, she reached into her bag and pulled out blue ribbons. Everyone who joined the session received one. Making the moment even more special, pictures from the day were featured during the Bright Spot segment on WHAM13 News.
“Tacky the Penguin” was so instrumental to Sheila as a teacher, her students made a mini replica of her classroom featuring the beloved character — a gift for her retirement.
“These weekly gatherings remind us that residents bring a lifetime of experiences with them,” said Julie Westcott, Executive Director of Evergreen Place. “Sheila’s ‘Penguin Days’ were new to many of us, and now they’re part of Evergreen Place, too.”
