Bill R. proves that good things come in small, hand-carved packages. The resident of Bridgewood Gardens Assisted Living and Memory Care in Albertville, Alabama had the opportunity to share his woodcarvings — crafted with the same pocketknife his father gave him years ago — with fellow residents and staff.
At 88, Bill has been part of the senior living community for a few months. But his carving hobby goes way back to his Tennessee childhood, when whittling was just something most folks did. When he got married, he asked his wife if she minded the mess. Her answer: “No, as long as you clean it up.”

Among the collection Bill displayed is Joe, a bird, and his very first carving. It’s clear some things stick around longer than others. Bill carved out time to unwind after a stressful career as a chemist. Now retired and enjoying his time in the community, he’s taking a break from carving — “my hands won’t cooperate,” he says. But his work is still often viewed and appreciated by his new neighbors.
“Bill’s craftsmanship reminds us that some hobbies never go out of style,” said Sharion Walls, Executive Director at Bridgewood Gardens. “It’s great to hear the stories behind his beautiful creations.”
